History and Future of Taekwondo – Kukkiwon, the center of Taekwondo culture
In 1973, it laid the groundwork that launched Taekwondo as an international art by holding the world's first Taekwondo championship and establishing the World Taekwondo Federation.
In 1978, Kukkiwon committed to the unity and the growth of Taekwondo by integrating 10 separate Taekwondo Kwans, namely the Chung Do Kwan, Moo Duk Kwan, Jido Kwan, Song Moo Kwan, Chang Moo Kwan, Kang Duk Won, Jung Do Kwan, Oh Do Kwan, Han Moo Kwan and Kwan li Kwan.
After establishing World Taekwondo Federation and holding the World Taekwondo Championship, Kukkiwon continues to promote and develop the Taewondo spirit and skill. In 1974, Kukkiwon Taekwondo
demonstration Team was established, whose main goal was to travel worldwide introducing and spreading the Taekwondo spirit and skill. Kukkiwon continues to actively promote the martial art by conducting overseas tours for Poomsae training, international seminars and the World Taekwondo Leaders Forum for academic interchanges. It has dispatched 12 Taekwondo instructors to 12 underdeveloped countries in an effort to enhance the growing Taekwondo value. Through the Taekwondo Friendship Training Program, Kukkiwon facilitates and diversifies its plans to further expand and globalize Taekwondo. Because of such efforts, Kukkiwon has contributed in registering Taewondo as an official sport in the Olympics and maintaining its status as a true Olympic sport by increasing the number of Taekwondo practitioners. Kukkiwon established the Dan/Poom Promotion Test, which measures a trainee's commitment in his or her own personal growth in Taekwondo. Through this test, Kukkion further established its excellent reputation as the home of Taekwondo and has produced about 7.3 million poom/dan holders. Kukkiwon conducts the World Taekwondo Hanmadang every year, through which the essentials of Taewondo are demonstrated, such as breaking, self defense and poom sae. Through the World Taekwondo Hanmadang, Kukkiwon has created a venue for Taekwondo players to come together and learn from each other in further developing the art.

that aims cultivate and nurture trainees into becoming coaches and thereby establish the future Taekwondo. Also, in an effort to truly develop the quality and abilities of Taekwondo coaches, Kukkiwon has developed and classified specific curriculums for all different coach courses. As a result, Kukkiwon has produced 5 million coaches, fulfilling its mission to produce Taekwondo coaches who shall perform their best as Taekwondo future leaders.
In 2007, Kukkiwon opened the Research Institute of Taekwondo that aims to strengthen the academic foundations of Taekwondo by conducting research on the history and spirit of Taekwondo, developing the poomsae and activating the gym.

The World Taekwondo Hanmadang festival
Gathers together Taekwando practitioners from around the world in order to revitalize and promote the art as a cultural and tourism resource. Since its founding in the year 1972 with the purpose of rising Taekwondo to an international level above and beyond mere re-organizational and development, Kukkiwon has made spectacular progress each year so as to achieve these following results,

Poom / Dan Promotion Test
The Dan/Poom Promotion Test is a process that measures a trainee's commitment in personal growth in Taekwondo. After 10 Gwans' integration in 1978, Kukkiwon had fomulated a system and has turned out Poom/Dan Holders in great numbers around 7.3 millions and has come up to fame as the World Taekwondo Headquarters.It classifies the system of Taekwondo Poom/Dan Promotion Test into Poom and Dan. Practicioner under 15 must get Poom from 1 Poom to 4 Poom and Practicioner over 15 might get Dan from 1 Dan to 9 Dan.Certificates issued by Kukkiwon is held in high estimation from all practitioners around the world, and you have to hold it to participate in international events or championships supervised by WTF.

The institute plays a major role in the academic research of the martial art, leading the study of Taekwondo history and developing new Taekwondo techniques.Since its establishment, the institute has performed successful projects such as developing new Taekwondo techniques, establishing Taekwondo terms and history and conducting seminars. Through such efforts, the institute has provided the vision and guide that shall pave the future the martial art. Seoul World Taekwondo Leaders Forum
The Seoul World Taekwondo Leaders Forum is an event that fosters the academic exchange among Taekwondo leaders from around the world who have gathered together to discuss the vision and future of Taekwondo and the academy of Taekwondo. The Seoul World Taekwondo Leaders Forum aims to set the future value of Taekwondo and share academic research on Taekwondo with Taekwondo leaders from around the world, thus creating a network that could set the future value of Taekwondo.The Seoul World Taekwondo Leaders Forum 2009 was held focusing on four topics, which include the following:1) Strategy and plan on international commitment of Taekwondo

Kukkiwon Dispatch Taekwondo Instructor
Kukkiwon has dispatched 12 Taekwondo instructors to 12 developing countries for the purpose of promoting friendship and introducing the Taekwondo culture. The dispatched instructors with their highest ability and characters are devoted to introduce the martial and develop Taekwondo culture in the developing countries. They contribute to keep Taekwondo as an official Olympic game. In addition, they are also committed to promoting friendship between Korea and these countries upon heightening the interest and understanding of Korean culture. Kukkiwon will do its utmost to introduce Korea worldwide and promote friendship with developing and underdeveloped countries by enhancing and cultivating the qualities and abilities of its instructors in cooperation with the government.
Taekwondo Demonstration Performance & Experience Program
Since 2007, in cooperation with the city of Seoul, Kukkiwon has been holding regular Taekwondo demonstrations at the Kyunghee Palace for international tourists visiting Korea. The performance is held from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm every Wednesday and Saturday from March to December on the palace grass yard. Kukkiwon considered this as a new opportunity in promoting Taekwondo as a cultural and tourism resource such as the regular Taekwondo demonstrations. For the last two years, more than 3 million foreign tourists have watched the performance, which proves that the regular Taekwondo demonstrations play a major role bringing tourists and visitors to Korea. The performance introduces and spreads the superiority of the Korean culture and raises the international image of Taekwondo, thereby increasing the number of its practitioners. And as a part of Korean tourism, Kukkiwon operates the Taekwondo Experience Program to allow tourists and foreign visitors to experience Taekwondo. The program is held three times a day from Tuesday to Sunday to draw the interest and responses of foreign tourists to the basic Taekwondo techniques such as self-defense and breaking. Through this event, Kukkiwon can heighten the people's interest in Taekwondo and promise tourist’s happy Taekwondo memories and experiences from their visit to Korea, thereby expanding and introducing the Korean traditional culture of Taekwondo worldwide.
Taekwondo Friendship Trainig Program
In 2009 Kukkiwon started a CPI program called the Taekwondo Friendly Study Program for United Taekwondo. Opportunities are provided to countries in Asia and Africa with relatively small cultural exchange. With the program, we target the promotion of friendships through Taekwondo, establish the endorsement of Taekwondo and cultural advancement partnerships in the future through the personal networks of the participants, increase our pride and honor as the Taekwondo’s home and play roles as foreign cultural diplomats for Korea. Under the banner of ' Win-Win Taekwondo,' Kukkiwon will continue carrying out the personal projects that should be the responsibility of Taekwondo’s home,, by inviting Taekwondo lovers in developing countries who have difficulty acquiring martial arts and advancing the core Korean skills.

Since then, it has been recognized as the leading international competition on the various Taekwondo techniques and skills. It is proud of its highly valued Taekwondo tradition worldwide.

WORLD TAEKWONDO ACADEMY
INTRODUCTION
Founded in 1983, the world Taekwondo academy has been nurturing physically, mentally and socially excellent people in order to spread the traditional Taekwondo spirit and skills.
Currently, its top Taekwondo curriculum is acknowledged as an essential preparatory course for aspirants to become instructors in domestic and foreign countries. As of the end of 2008, it had produced 30,961 third grade Taekwondo instructors, 830 second grade Taekwondo instructors, 158 first grade Taekwondo instructors, 4,753 second grade coaches, 7,228 third grade life physical educators and 691 foreign master coaches, all well-prepared for the task. Since 2006 when we first opened a leader course for the disabled, we have provided equal education in leadership for all.
Under our belief that the quality of Taekwondo leaders can be acquired through awareness and virtue as a leader as well as through concise physical skills training, Kukkiwon Training Facility nurtures instructors through an education curriculum ideal for Taekwondo teachers equipped with not only the Taekwondo spirit but also leadership.
Leaders produced by the Kukkiwon Training Facility through the program play an important role as carriers of the Taekwondo spirit not only domestically but also globally, and as cultural ambassadors who spread Korean culture and Taekwondo.

EDUCATIONAL COURSES
a) INSTRUCTOR TRAINING COURSE
The Foreign Instructors Training Course (1st, 2nd, and 3rd Class) is a systematic curriculum designed to improve the quality of Master's Training and Instruction ability. So far this course has produced over 35,000 Qualified Instructors in 188 countries, who are now active in teaching and disseminating their newfound knowledge and skills.
b) WORLD TAEKWOND HANMADANG REFEREE COURSE
Every year, over five thousand Taekwondo practitioners from over fifty countries participate in the prestigious World Taekwondo Hanmadang, an international festival consisting of various contests in: Poomsae (Patterns), Kyokpa (Breaking), Hoshinsul (Self-Defence), and Taekwon-Aerobics. The World Taekwondo Hanmadang is a celebration of all aspects of Taekwondo, performed by and for Taekwondo practitioners from around the world. To this end, the Kukkiwon produces over five hundred specialist Hanmadang Referees and Judges, who will learn the practice of fair and equitable judging in the Hanmadang Referee Course Levels 1-3). These Hanmadang referees make for a consistent, efficient, and fair competition for all participants, ensuring the World Taekwondo Hanmadang is a world-class event.
